Skip-Counting Songs
These songs are meant to be used after the grades when students have already had the chance to memorize their facts the traditional way, which is flashcards. They are not a substitute for traditional memorization; they are a less optimal remedy in the later grades. Both flashcards and skip-counting songs are a memory tool. Students need a conceptual understanding of what multiplication is and they need time to develop strategies for finding products before they work on memorization.
Operation Chants
These chants can be used as a memory anchor AFTER students have been taught conceptually using place value, properties of operations and the relationship between operations.
